Jade's key turned in the lock of her apartment with a dull click, the sound somehow echoing the finality of her day. Stepping inside, she felt the walls embrace her as she shrugged off the coat of professionalism that had clung to her shoulders like armor at the FBI headquarters. With the door shut firmly behind her, the weight of everything pressed down on her—a physical manifestation of the mental toll.

The apartment was silent except for the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. She walked to her bedroom, each step measured and heavy, and sat on the edge of her bed. The comforter was cool under her fingers, a stark contrast to the heated urgency that had pulsed through the conference room just an hour earlier.

Her phone lay on the nightstand, its screen dark and unassuming. Jade reached for it, her movements slow as if wading through the thick slurry of her own exhaustion. The device came to life at her touch, casting a pale glow across her face. She scrolled through her contacts until she found the one labeled 'Bear.'

"Hey, Dane," she said when her call was answered, her voice steady despite the fatigue that laced it. "Any progress with Redman?" With all the chaos of today, Jade had nearly forgotten that she’d confronted DJ Redman about his possible role in Amber’s death. A mistake, driven by emotion. She hoped she hadn’t messed their whole investigation up.

There was a brief pause on the line, filled only by the faint crackle of static before Dane's gruff voice responded. "No, kid. He's spooked. Canceled his show tonight. Looks like he's going underground."

"Damn," she murmured, processing the information. Jade's fingers curled into a fist, knuckles whitening as she listened to Dane's steady voice on the other end of the line. The frustration that simmered within her threatened to boil over. "I feel like I'm chasing shadows, Dane. Amelia and Joy's killer is still out there, and every dead end feels like I'm failing them... and Amber."

"Jade," Dane's voice was firm, yet soothing, like the slow compression of a meditative breath. "Losses are part of the job. They're harsh, yes, but they're not a measure of your failure. You've got to keep pushing forward, use that frustration to fuel your determination, not let it paralyze you."

She sighed, the sound heavy with accumulated stress. The room around her felt too quiet, too still, like the calm before a storm. Dane's words were a lifeline, a reminder of why she had chosen this path—why she couldn't give up.

"Preventing further tragedies... that's what it's all about, isn't it?" Jade murmured, more to herself than to Dane. She could almost see him nodding on the other side, his brutish features softening in understanding.

"Exactly. You have a fire in you, Jade. That same fire that drove you in gymnastics, that fuels you now. Channel it. Let it drive your pursuit for justice, not just for those lost, but for yourself and for Amber."

Her throat tightened at the mention of her sister.
